What You Should Look For

The Right Anchor

Anchor manufacturers provide tables indicating which anchor weight fits which boat length and displacement. Additionally, consider the typical seabed in your cruising area—sand, mud, grass, or rock.

Chain and Anchor Line

How much ground tackle you deploy depends on water depth, wind, and the seabed. A rule of thumb is at least three to five times the water depth, and more if using line instead of chain. Ensure you use compatible connectors.

Fenders and Mooring Lines

Fenders should match the boat size and be numerous enough to protect the hull. Mooring lines made of elastic material dampen jolts and protect cleats and the hull.

Sail Repair and Canvas Covers

For minor repairs on board, repair strips, sailcloth, sewing thread, and tools are useful. For covers and cushions, there are specialized fabrics, zippers, and fastening systems.
